President Hamid Karzai has recently signed legislation making it legal for a husband to have sexual intercourse with his wife against her will. While many will say that this has been common practice in Afghani society for a very long time, the Afghani government is making a disturbing statement to the world about its views on the human rights of women. This legislation is of great concern to the international watchdogs for human rights around the world, and should be of great concern to all of us.
